Hey guys, I was just wondering what do I do, if my snakes won't eat thawed rats. I have two snakes. I've had them for 3 months now, they were eating just fine, but if they don't eat, can I freeze these rats again, or throw them away? Sorry for bad english. Login to remove ads. I wouldn't suggest it once you completely thaw them.

Wait a longer time between feedings so the snakes get a bit more hungry, and then try again. The more experienced individuals might suggest some other feeding approaches, but I still wouldn't refreeze the rats after they've been out at room temperature and started going bad. Not sure if koijin is eating that gerbil but he looked more interested. If they've been freshly frozen and haven't been defrosted in hot water or anything I just refreeze them once, it's no big issue to be honest unless you would do it every time the nutritional value goes down a little bit that I know of.. That's why if you do it more than once you have a chance they will burst while defrosting..

I would be more careful if it's been out too long or if you defrosted it in warm water, as that would change the cell structure. I love this video of a gorgeous burmese python eating a less than fresh looking bird off the road. I would either feed it to something else if the option was available, or pitch it.

The fact that rodents from large companies have already been thawed and refrozen would be something to support pitching it instead of refreezing to me. They certainly do eat some nasty stuff in the wild and they'll eat nasty stuff in captivity too, but that doesn't mean that harmful bacterias that can lead to health conditions if continually expopsed salmonella group for example such as septicemia or other issues wouldn't be present on those nasties.

If something has been thawed out in let's say a fridge and hasn't been exposed to temperatures where those bacterias flourish, then my personal opinion would be different. Now you have both sides of the coin to consider is all.

I've refrozen prey items that were refused and used them later with no ill effects. SarahScales Well-Known Member. I've done this before too! Pythoninfinite Guest.

If it's only overnight and it was cool, there will be no problem at all. But if you've put them in the bin in the sun this morning Doesn't matter how many times people are told that many snakes, even pythons, eat carrion without harm, or that the food animals they swallow actually start to decay long before the digestive juices break through the gut wall because they don't mash their food by chewing , people still persist with the belief that their snake's digestive system is similar and as sensitive as ours.

I'm not suggesting you offer your snake putrid food, but it won't matter one whit to the health of the snake if the rodents have been thawed or partly thawed overnight and refrozen. Would you refreeze a steak that was left out over night? Hoplophile Active Member.

Won't be an issue if they were still cool I've done this many times. Over the last 30 years or so I have had several instances of snakes eating mice that have been in an enclosure missed because they were buried by the snake or moved and presumed to have been consumed first time around for a day or more. I've also re-frozen rats that have thawed but remained cool when my fridge-freezer door didn't close properly.

It depends how far they've gone but overnight and still cool won't be a problem. And yes some snakes do eat carrion. Rattlesnakes are known for eating road kills. I know of one zoo that had an Eastern Diamondback that would only eat rabbits if they'd been thawed for a couple of days. Very interesting thread, getting some different insights and very good points Gotta love these forums Jungletrans Very Well-Known Member. I would make the person who left them out eat them ;].

Our own Tiger Snakes have been know to dine on carrion. What about other herps, like most of the larger monitors and crocs. Okay Thanks everyone. They where hot, As I live in a Humid area. I have thrown them in the bin, As I rather be safe then sorry. Last edited: Jan 16, I wish you were in Vic, I'd buy them off you for a reduced rate to feed to my ferrets.

They loooooove manky rats! Snowman Guest. Last edited by a moderator: Jan 16, So, teenagers. I once heard of a teenager who was really obsessed with animals.

Let us call him Briggs because the name sounds distinguished. So Briggs really loved animals and because of that, someone gifted him a snake. Briggs, however, knew nothing about snakes, and so despite all he did, the snake got sicker and sicker, and it eventually died.

Briggs got very sad, and this was because he did not know how to adequately care for the snake. Like the question above. Snake owners ask this question a lot online with no adequate answer. So let us answer this question, shall we? Snakes can be very haughty creatures, and when you try to feed them a mouse that you just thawed, they may reject it or not eat it. It could be because they are full or do not feel like eating in that particular period. Or it could be that they want to spite you the lowly human and all your sighs of slight frustration is entertainment to them just kidding!

Or am I? Well, first thing is, mice can be refrozen. A study by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation answered the question about whether or not it was okay to refreeze thawed meat under certain conditions. So this is first thing to note about refreezing mice.

Do not let it thaw above that temperature that we mentioned above.
