In , Yoritomo died, and his rule passed over to his son, Yoriie. In , the feud got so great that the Hojo family directly attacked the Hiki family and eliminated them. They deposed Yoriie, and replaced him with his younger brother Sanetomo, who was only 11 years old and in need of a regency council.
His maternal grandfather was the true ruler of Kamukura regime what they called the shogunate. Two years after this, Masako and her brother deposed theor father and then reorganized the Kamakura power structure. Masako had recently become a larger member of the religious community, by shaving her head for religious reasons. Her brother became regent over the still young Sanetomo. Over the course of fifteen years, the brother and sister pair targeted and eliminated warrior houses in Japan that were potential or actual threats and competitors.
They usually did this by cleverly inciting rebellion from the warrior clans. In , Sanetomo was assassinated, which gave Masako and her brother the excuse to declare martial law and became dictators over the shogunate. A very noteworthy achievement of theirs was their defeat over the army of the former emperor, which was raised and sent out to destroy the Kamakura regime.
Due to this victory, they greatly expanded their rule. Their most noteworthy achievement during this period was their victory in over an army raised by the former emperor, Go-Toba, and sent out to destroy the Kamakura regime. The shogunate's triumph in this conflict resulted in an expansion of its vassal network in western Japan and the appointment of shogunal deputies to govern the imperial capital city of Kyoto.
When Yoshitoki died in - some say that he was poisoned by his wife, who hoped to shift control of the shogunate to her own family - it was the sixty-seven-year-old Masako who foiled the plot and ensured the succession of Yoshitoki's son Yasutoki as regent.
Thus this remarkable woman remained a political player to be reckoned with almost to the moment of her death a year later. Although Masako never saw a battlefield, she was perhaps the most important woman in Japanese military history. She built her fame not as a warrior, but as a governor of warriors.
For this wife of Japan's first national warrior chieftain and mother of two others was one of the principal architects of the Kamakura shogunate, a regime that dominated her country's military men and military affairs for more than a century and a half. Because of the key role that Masako played in the wielding and consolidation of power, she came to be referred to as Ama Shogun, the Nun Shogun. After the death of Masako's husband, she kept getting pulled back into politics.
From there on, she ruled pretty much directly - despite the fact that she was, on paper, just a common nun. Masako openly defied her husband. When Yoritomo impregnated another lover, Masako ordered the woman dismissed and then run out of town.
This delighted Masako, and she took Shizuka under her wing, even trying to help her get out of town. Yoriie often indulged in entertainment, particularly enjoying Kemari , a game in which a players try to keep a ball in air by kicking it. Masako admonished him for spending so much time playing Kemari ; however, he refused to listen. There had been number of incidents in which Yoriie had misgoverned, increasing his retainers' discontent. The rise of the Hiki clan was a threat to the Hojo clan.
In , Yoriie fell critically ill. Masako and Tokimasa decided to divide Japan in two by splitting power between Ichiman and Sanetomo.
Unhappy with this decision, Yoshikazu appealed to Yoriie on his deathbed to intervene in this decision by the head of the Hojo clan. Learning of the decision, Yoriie was enraged, and he ordered the subjugation of the Hojo clan.
Masako overheard their conversation from the other side of the screened door and sent a messenger to Tokimasa, who plotted to kill Yoshikazu. He used Masako's name to form an army to overthrow the Hiki clan. Upon recovering from his critical illness, Yoriie was enraged to learn that the Hiki clan had been overthrown and killed and that Ichiman was dead, and he ordered Tokimasa subdued but by then, full power was in the hands of the Hojo clan and, on Masako's orders, Yoriie was removed from the position of Shogun , forced to join the priesthood and confined to Shuzen-ji Temple in Izu.
Yoriie was later assassinated. Sanetomo was made Shogun and his father, Tokimasa, was appointed the first regent. Tokimasa and his wife, Maki no kata , attempted to monopolize power, and Masako quickly recalled Sanetomo from Tokimasa's residence. Masako and Yoshitoki foiled the plot, forcing Tokimasa into exile as a priest in Izu. Thereafter, Yoshitoki was placed in power the Maki incident. Unlike Yoriie, who had always insisted on having his own way, Sanetomo was more academically oriented, honored the Imperial Court and strived for a harmonious relationship with the nobility.
For this reason, the Retired Emperor Gotoba treated Sanetomo well, and he moved steadily up the ladder. However, this extremely good relationship with the Imperial Court was not advantageous to the samurai class, who grew increasingly discontent. To avoid future problems, Masako put Yoriie's children into the priesthood.
One of them, Kugyo , became the head betto of Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Shrine. Sanetomo's official position at court was further elevated to Udaijin Minister of the Right. Yoshitoki and OE no Hiromoto warned Sanetomo that he was isolating himself from the samurai at court but Sanetomo refused to listen. In , Sanetomo went to Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Shrine to give thanks for promotion to Udaijin , where he was killed by his nephew.
According to the historical document " Jokyuki ," Masako was devastated by the news, saying that: 'Losing Udaijin , the only child I had left, I have nothing to live for. Why must a nun live alone in a world that is so full of sadness. I even thought of throwing myself into a river. The Retired Emperor Gotoba refused, saying that 'such a thing would divide Japan in two.
Yoshitoki refused, saying that it would shake the very foundation of the Bakufu government. Yoshitoki gave troops to his younger brother, Tokifusa, and sent him to Kyoto to discuss sending the prince to Kamakura , but Retired Emperor Gotoba refused. Tokifusa returned to Kamakura with Mitora. Since Mitora was only 2 years of age, Masako was appointed his guardian and ruled the country in Mitora's place, becoming known as the Ama Shogun.
In , opposition deeper between the Retired Emperor Gotoba, wishing to re-capture authority for the Imperial Court, and the government, and finally the Emperor attacked Mitsusue IGA, the Shugo military governor in Kyoto and established a military police force.
Receiving news of the Retired Emperor's army, the samurai in Kamakura panicked. The samurai still greatly feared the Imperial Court. Her last words were spoken with tears in her eyes: 'Our indebtedness to the late Utaisho Yoritomo is higher than a mountain and deeper than the ocean; because of the lies of traitors, the Emperor has given unjust orders.
If you wish to side with the Emperor, speak up and leave immediately. The soldiers themselves are each regarded as very low level servants that even a normal magus can take on.
Masako usually supplements her soldiers by buffing them with her skills and noble phantasms. The amount of soldiers she can summon is also dependent on the amount of magical energy that is afforded to her. With an E rank master she would only be able to summon or less.
These samurai are summoned with basic weaponry such as; Katana, Naginata, Bows and Arrows etc. They possess moderate skill with these weapons as well. Masako can use them in direct combat, stealth missions, information gathering, and even assassinations. Due to them not giving out much of an aura pegging them as servants is difficult. This is one of the reasons it has achieved an A ranking. The versitality of the phantasm is reflected through its ranking, despite not possessing overwhelming powers.
If ever summoned within Japan the strength of the samurai would drastically increase. A noble phantasm of Masako. A ritual she performed to help her husband, Yoritomo, in his conquests. Due to the nature of the ability, it can only be used on one target.
It is also a phantasm Masako refuses to use. If someone were to achieve a similar bond to him she would possibly use it, however. A noble phantasm born from the immense charisma of Masako.
